Authentications

How to Request an Authentication

An owner or authorized representative of an owner of a work believed to be by Alexander H. Wyant, may request an opinion of authenticity by downloading a Request for Authentication form, filling it out fully, and forwarding it to: The Wyant Website, 1059 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA 02446.  Please include a best possible photograph(s) that may be retained by the Site.  Alternatively, the request may be made online by filling out the form referenced below.  In some instances, the Site may request further information.  A written opinion will be forwarded to you within a short time, at no charge.  If you have a particular question, you may submit it via the "Contacts" section of the Site.

Levels of Authentication Defined

Every works for which a photographic image is shown on the Site has been assigned a level of authentication.  All levels are defined below.  Many "have not seen" works are assigned an "A2P" level based on a poor photographic image.  These are susceptible to receiving a higher level of authentication based on direct observation of the work or receipt of a better photographic image.  AE and AL designations identify a small number of works that are believed to fall outside a date range of ca. 1863 to 1890 and that are very difficult to authenticate.  The Site stores but does not publish images of works attributed to Wyant by others that are believed to be questionable or non-authentic.

A1

Work has been seen and is authentic; work has distinctive "Wyant look" and no questionable features; provenance or other authenticating information may accompany work; an A1 level of authentication is not a guarantee of authenticity.

A2

Work has been seen and appears very likely to be authentic; work has "Wyant look" but may not have been seen in many years or may have one or more questionable features; provenance or other authenticating information may accompany work; this level of authentication is not a guarantee of authenticity.

A1P

Work has not been seens and is known only by a good quality photographic image(s); image reveals that work has distinctive "Wyant look" and appears very likely to be authentic; photographic image(s) reveals no questionable features; provenance or other authenticating information may accompany work; this level of authentication is not a guarantee of authenticity.

A2P

Work has not been seen and is known only through ordinary quality photographic image(s) that indicate work in general has "Wyant look" and appears to be authentic, although such photographs can be misleading; work may have one or two minor questionable features; provenance or other authenticating information may accompany work; this level of authentication is not a guarantee of authenticity.

AE

Work appears to be early and made no later than 1865; work may or may not have been seen; authentication of all early works is speculative due to lack of reliable information and because such works lack recognizable "Wyant look"; this designation is not a guarantee of authenticity.

AL

Work appears to be very late; athentications of very late works are speculative due to lack of reliable information and because such works lack a "Wyant look"; this designation is not a guarantee of authenticity.
